ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 24 TCU women's tennis team blanked Utah by a score of 7-0 on Saturday en route to their 10th consecutive victory. With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 17-4 this season and remained perfect with a 7-0 mark in Mountain West Conference play."This was a huge win for us today," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "Utah fought really hard and they're a good group. We have New Mexico tomorrow, and its their senior day, and we'll have the chance to win the Mountain West Conference regular season title outright, so something has to give. We're looking forward to tomorrow's battle."
TCU's Maria Babanova and Nina Munch-Soegaard led off doubles play with an 8-3 victory over Utah's duo of Leigh Walsh and Karine Bourdages at the No. 3 position. After TCU's 12th-ranked duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska fell at the top spot, the Frog duo of Katariina Tuohimaa and Idunn Hertzberg fought back from a 5-3 deficit to clinch the point with an 8-6 victory over Andrea Maughan and Erin Monson.
The Frogs stormed out in singles play, winning the first three contests in straight sets to clinch the match.
Tuohimaa began with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Walsh at the No. 4 spot for the freshman's 17th victory this season.
Sydorska, ranked No. 86 nationally in singles play, followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Monson at the No. 2 position to improve to 14-5 this season.
Harkins sealed the match for the Frogs with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Emily Kwok at the No. 2 spot. The win was Harkins' 11th in the last 12 contests.
Munch-Soegaard put TCU up 5-0 in the match with an impressive 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over No. 60 Elizabeth Ferris at the top spot, while Idunn Hertzberg reeled off five consecutive games in the second set to defeat Maughan by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Kewa Nichols rounded out the scoring on Saturday with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory over Bourdages at the No. 5 position. Nichols fought back after dropping the first set and starting the second frame down 3-0.
Saturday's win kept TCU's hopes of claiming the outright MWC regular season title alive, as the Frogs will face No. 55 New Mexico on Sunday.
