LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A heartbreaking end to the series finale against UNLV gave the Rebels a 7-6 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs Sunday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels had runners on second and third with two outs and a misplay in right field allowed the winning run to score. The Frogs, who had trailed 6-3 battled back to tie the game in the seventh inning, left 11 men stranded on base. Bryan Kervin and Chris Ellington each hit home runs for the Frogs.
A lead-off walk to Jesse Wight in the bottom of the ninth came back to haunt the Frogs as he ended up coming home with the winning run. Paul Gerrish (2-2) retired the next two batters, but a bloop single to right by Roundy kept the inning alive for Braden Walker. The inning looked to be over as Walker skied the ball to right, but Chris Ellington saw the ball fall out of his glove to send the Rebels to victory.
The Rebels struck first as they picked up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. A lead-off walk to Rance Roundy came back to hurt the Frogs as he moved to third on a Michael Brenly double with one out. Jarred Frierson singled to left on the first pitch he saw to drive in two runs. With runners on the corners and one out, TCU starter Greg Holle got J.J. Sferra to ground into an inning-ending double play ball to keep it a two-run deficit.
With one swing of the bat, Chris Ellington cut the Rebel lead in half. He took a 1-1 offering from Thomas Whitsett and drove it over the center field fence for his first career home run. Bryan Kervin knotted the game at two with a one-out home run that was a no-doubter when it left the bat and sailed over the right field fence.
TCU grabbed its first lead of the game on a two-out double from Chris Ellington in the fourth. Matt Carpenter worked a one-out walk and moved to second on an errant throw by the third baseman, who tried to double him off of first after Hunt Woodruff lined out. Ellington made the error hurt as he drove the ball to the wall, driving home Carpenter from second for a 3-2 lead.
The Rebels tied the game with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Roundy singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch. Brenly doubled for the second time in the contest to plate Roundy and tie the game at three. A two-out base hit from Steve Rinaudo in the bottom of the fifth helped the Rebels regain the lead at 4-3.
Holle went 4 2/3 innings in the no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Two errors proved costly as the Rebels extended their lead to 6-3. Brenly reached and moved to second on a throwing error to lead off the inning. Sferra singled home Brenly and a balk sent home the second run of the inning.
Three straight doubles from Kervin, Clint Arnold and Holaday to open the seventh got the Frogs within one, 6-5. Steve Ellington singled to put runners on the corners and Hunt Woodruff came through with a two-out single to tie the game at six. The Frogs loaded the bases but couldn't get the hit that would break the tie.
TCU falls to 14-12 on the season and 2-4 in conference play. They return home briefly for a game against Baylor Tuesday night. The game will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
