FORT WORTH, Texas- The TCU Equestrian team learned its postseason fate Tuesday, as the brackets were announced for the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, April 17-19.
The Western team earned the #1 seed coming off a perfect 11-0 season, defeating opponents such as Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina and Baylor along the way. The team, which earns a bye in the first round as a result of its seeding, will play the winner of the New Mexico State-Baylor game.
Last season the Frogs earned the number 10 seed a year ago, and fell in the first round to South Carolina 5-3.
TCU is 2-0 against Baylor this season, winning their most recent matchup 6-2 in Mansfield on March 8. The Frogs defeated the Bears 4-2 in Waco earlier this season as part of the Baylor Fall Tournament.
History could be made if New Mexico State were to advance, as TCU and New Mexico State have never met one another. The Aggies were 6-3 on the season, and defeated Baylor 8-1 in Las Cruces, N.M. on January 27.
TCU reached another program milestone Tuesday as Kindel Huffman received the #1 seed in Horsemanship as part of the individual championship. Huffman is coming off a perfect 10-0 season in the event with a team high four MVPs.
Carrie von Uhlit who went 6-2 on the season in Horsemanship with two MVPs received the first alternate seed for the event.
This year marks the first time Varsity Equestrian has held an individual championship. The tournament will have four riders from each event compete to determine the best rider in each event.
Huffman's first round opponent will be Laura Upton from the University of Georgia. Upton was 6-2 in Horsemanship with four MVPs. Upton did not compete in the game when TCU traveled to Georgia earlier this season.
TCU's Hunt Seat team, which received the first alternate seed for the tournament, will be back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. in Dallas, as it travels to SMU. The game will be comprised of only Hunt Seat riders. Log on to gofrogs.com for all the coverage of the game against SMU, as well as the upcoming Varsity Equestrian Championships.
