FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite a strong relief outing from Tyler Lockwood, the TCU Horned Frogs couldn't hold on to a late lead as they fell to the Tulane Green Wave, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at the Dairy Queen Classic. Tulane scored three times in its final two at-bats to erase a 3-2 Frog lead. Ben Carruthers led the team offensively with three hits, two stolen bases and a run driven in.Another two-out hit gave a Frog opponent an early lead. TCU starter Greg Holle battled control issues, walking the first two batters he faced. After getting a double play ball off the bat of Sam Honeck, Holle hit Jared Dyer. A stolen base by Dyer put two runners in scoring position and Rob Segedin gave Tulane a 2-0 lead with a single up the middle.
TCU was able to cut the Green Wave lead in half as they picked up a two-out run of its own in the top of the third. Ben Carruthers singled for the second time in the contest with one and stole second base. Matt Carpenter skied a ball to left field, which Tulane left fielder Anthony Scelfo lost in the domed roof of the Metrodome, allowing it to fall in safely for an RBI-double.
A two-run fourth inning gave TCU its first lead of the contest. Bryan Holaday led off the inning with a bunt single and moved all the way to third on a stolen base and throwing error by the catcher. Bryan Kervin knotted the game at two with a sharply-hit single to center field. Carruthers continued his torrid hitting as he picked up a big two-out hit that plated Kervin with the go-ahead run. The Frogs worked around a one-out triple in the bottom of the inning to hold onto the 3-2 lead.
Tyler Lockwood, who had come on with two outs in the first, held the Green Wave in check for five innings, but in the bottom of the seventh, Tulane struck for the game-tying run. Andrew Rodgers walked to lead off the inning and pinch-runner Nick Boullosa scored on a two-out triple by Drew Allain. With runners on the corners, Paul Gerrish got Dyer to foul out to end the inning and preserve the tie.
Lockwood was a calming force for the Horned Frogs as he threw a career-high six innings of relief. He allowed just the one run on five hits, walked two and struck out four. At one point, he retired eight straight batters.
An eighth inning home run by Tulane center fielder Aja Barto broke the scoreless tie as he connected with one out in the eighth inning off of Paul Gerrish (1-1). The Green Wave tacked on an insurance run with two outs on an RBI single from Seth Henry.
The Frogs couldn't muster a ninth-inning rally against Tulane closer Mason Griffin. Despite collecting 10 hits in the ballgame, the Frogs only scored three times, stranding eight baserunners.
The Frogs (3-4) will head home to open up a seven-game home stand. TCU will square off against cross-town rival UT-Arlington on Tuesday evening at Lupton Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
