FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 31 TCU women's tennis team shutout No. 73 Texas Tech by a score of 7-0 on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs won their third consecutive match to improve to 5-2 overall, while the Red Raiders fell to 7-4 on the season."We had a strong performance today across the board," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "Texas Tech is a good team that has a competitive spirit that is matched by few others. I'm really happy with our performance today."
The 11th-ranked TCU duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska led off doubles play with an 8-3 victory over Texas Tech's Samantha van der Drift and Kelsy Garland at the top position to push their unblemished record to 6-0 this season.
TCU's Kewa Nichols and Idunn Hertzberg followed with an 8-4 victory over Brenna Jackson and Simone Templeton at the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point, while the Horned Frog duo of Nina Munch-Soegaard and Katariina Tuohimaa completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Kerryn Potgieter and Janet Durham.
Freshman Idunn Hertzberg began singles action with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Leah Roberts at the No. 6 position, followed by a TCU win at the No. 2 flight, as Sydorska downed Garland by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Sydorska has now won six consecutive matches to push her record to 6-1 on the season.
Harkins would clinch the match for TCU at the No. 3 position, defeating Templeton by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Munch-Soegaard followed with her fourth victory of the season at the top spot against van der Drift, while Tuohimaa put TCU up 6-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Potgieter. Nichols completed the sweep for the Frogs with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-7 victory over Durham at the No. 4 flight.
The Frogs will return to the courts on Monday at 1:30 p.m. when they will play host to No. 15 Fresno State.
