Once again, Horned Frog student-athletes have shown academic prowess in the classroom. The departmental semester grade-point average of 2.87 marked the third-highest total since figures were tracked prior to the 1998 Fall semester. The final average finished just shy of reaching school-record numbers set each of the past two semesters. The current student-athlete cumulative GPA of 2.86 was the third-highest ever posted over the same period.
"The TCU community is very proud of not only the athletic but also the academic accomplishments of our Horned Frog student-athletes," TCU director of athletic academic services Chris Uchacz said. "They truly epitomize the term student-athlete as they continue to excel in the classroom while making graduation of the highest priority."
Highlighting the semester were 39 past and present Frog graduates, the highest number of student-athletes to date honored during a December convocation. Five of those graduates, recipients of the NCAA Degree Completion Award, returned to the TCU campus to complete their degrees after exhausting their athletic eligibility. TCU boasted seven winners overall to rank among the nation's leading institutions for recipients of the scholarship.
The individual efforts of all Horned Frog student-athletes have helped the TCU athletics department continue to make strides in academics over recent years. Following the Fall 2007 semester, 13 of TCU's 20 athletic programs boasted cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Twenty-five student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs during the past fall semester, while 20 percent were at 3.5 and 34 percent finishing 3.2 or above. At least 50 percent of all TCU student-athletes registered a 3.0 or higher.
