TCU concludes day three at MWC meet

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The TCU men's swimming and diving team posted three top-three finishes, while freshman Maria Alvarez set another school record to highlight action on the women's side as TCU completed the third day at the Mountain West Conference Championships. The men dropped a spot to fifth place in the standings, while the women's squad remained in seventh.Junior diver R.J. Hesselberg recorded the highest finish for TCU on Friday with a runner-up showing in the platform event with a score of 285.55. Freshman Kyle Callens placed 14th in the event.
Senior Jonathon Berrettini swam to a third-place showing in the 100-back with a time of 48.98. Garrett Weaver and Josh Bagby also competed in the event, finishing 13th and 14th, respectively.
Three Frogs also finished in the top 16 in the 100-breast, led by Cameron Allred's time of 56.31 to place ninth. Edgar Peyro recorded a time of 57.23 to finish 13th, followed by Ben Biefnes in 15th place (57.87).
In the 400-IM event, Biefnes set a personal best en route to a 10th-place finish with a time of 4:02.13. Gettel also set a new personal best to finish 11th with a time of 4:02.24.
Other notable performances on Friday included Scott McCracken, Jason Hauck and Jeff Hendricks. In the 100-fly event, McCracken posted a personal-best time of 50.66 to finish 13th, followed by Hauck in 16th with a time of 51.41. Hendricks competed in the 200-free, placing 11th with a time of 1:40.53.
The 400-medley relay team of Berrettini, Allred, Hauck and McCracken swam to a third-place finish with a time of 3:22.90.
Freshman Samantha Smith recorded the highest finish on the women's side, placing ninth in the 100-back with a personal-best time of 57.57. Fellow freshman Brittney Martinez finished 15th in the event with a time of 58.07.
Maria Alvarez had another stellar showing on Friday, setting a school record in the 200-free with a time of 1:51.10 to place 10th. Alvarez, a native of Cali, Colombia, set a new TCU mark in the 500-free on Thursday.
In the 100-fly, Mychala Lynch placed 10th with a time of 57.38, followed by Stephanie Futscher in 12th with a time of 57.70.
Meredith Grubb competed in the 400-IM event, placing 11th in a time of 4:26.81, while Katie Rosen also recorded an 11th-place finish in the 100-breast with a clocking of 1:05.63.
The 400-medley relay squad of Martinez, Ellie Bradley, Natalie Melenric and Grubb finished sixth with a time of 3:56.70.
