TCU upsets No. 16 William & Mary on Sunday

FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 33 TCU women's tennis team knocked off No. 16 William & Mary on Sunday by a score of 4-3 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The win improves the Horned Frogs to 3-2 this season, while dropping William & Mary to 8-4 overall."It was a great relief to win the doubles point, as it paid dividends in terms of keeping us relaxed throughout the singles," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "I'm very excited to see the quality effort from start to finish on every court. In particular, Anna Sydorska is playing extremely well right now."
In doubles play, the TCU duo of Idunn Hertzberg and Kewa Nichols began with a crucial 8-4 win over the William & Mary team of Lauren Sabacinski and Barbara Zidek at the No. 3 position. After a TCU loss at the No. 2 slot, the 11th-ranked Frog duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska clinched the point with an 8-4 win over the No. 26 team of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic.
Sydorska led off singles play with her fourth consecutive victory, defeating Ragini Acharya by a score of 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
As the match tightened to 2-1, the freshmen came through for TCU to provide the last two wins to clinch the match. Hertzberg downed Carmen Pop at the No. 6 slot by a score of 7-5, 6-4, while Katariina Tuohimaa defeated Sabacinski by a score of 7-6(6), 6-2.
"Our freshmen are showing an excellent amount of poise and character in these big matches in tight situations," Hammond said.
"We have to maintain this championship attitude throughout the season to achieve the kind of success of which we are capable."
The Frogs will return to the courts on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to host SMU.
