FRESNO, Calif.- The TCU equestrian team (3-7) fell 7-4 to Fresno State in the championship match of the Best of the West tournament Sunday. The two teams will meet again in five days in Mansfield, Texas Feb. 22.
Despite the loss, the Frogs came out of the game with some impressive performances. Most notably, Ashton Mickunas earned her first MVP of the season in the Reining, with a score of 76.5.
"I'm so impressed with Ashton," Head Coach Gary Reynolds said. "This is just the second trip she's been with us, and she stepped up."
TCU tied in Reining 1-1, and won the Horsemanship 2-1, to earn the overall victory in the Western 3-2. With the victory, TCU has now improved to 9-0 in Western, and is now the only undefeated team in the nation.
The win did not come without drama as Carrie von Uhlit, was the last rider of the day, and was able to come away with a 76.5-75.5 win to secure the Western victory.
"Carrie von Uhlit was phenomenal," Reynolds said. "She had to race over after finishing Equitation on the Flat, change from her English outfit into her Western outfit, and get there just in time to rider her reiner."
With her participation in today's events, Von Uhlit became the second Frog in as many days to compete in all four events this season.
Other notable performances included Kindel Huffman running her record in Horsemanship up to 9-0. Chloe Baker made her first in game appearance since Oct. 6 against Stephen F. Austin. Baker is one of four returning Frogs from last year's national championship qualifying team.
TCU and Fresno State will meet again on Friday morning at 10:00 in Mansfield. All action can be followed on gofrogs.com.
