The TCU men's golf program made a strong move to the top of the leaderboard at the Columbia Invitational as the Horned Frogs posted a second round score of 296 en route to taking a six-stroke lead over Florida at the Galloway National Golf Club in Atlantic City, N.J.
The Frogs - who began the day in seventh place - were the only program to post a team score under 300 on Saturday afternoon and finished the second day of action with a 603 (307-296) tally. The University of Florida (609), Eastern Kentucky (613), Georgetown (614) and St. John's (618) round out the top five at the Columbia Invitational.
"The team played extremely solid today," said TCU head men's golf coach Bill Montigel. "The conditions were very brutal today with wind and rain, but our guys hit the ball very well and came back strong from yesterday's round. Once again - we are in the final group of a tournament so I'm extremely excited to see how this tournament ends up."
Johan de Beer (Pretoria, South Africa | Pretoria Boys H.S.) - who posted a tournament victory in his last outing - is once again in position for a championship as the TCU newcomer is currently tied for second overall with a two-round score of 149 (75-74). The South Africa standout is tied with Tim McKenney of Florida for second-place while sitting three strokes behind Penn's Michael Blodgett at the top of the leaderboard.
"Johan played really solid today and had a good round. This is a tough course, and he's been playing very smart and hitting some really good shots," said Montigel.
De Beer isn't the only Frogs with his sights set on the tournament title as Scott Roudebush (Austin, Texas | Austin H.S.) is currently in sixth-place with a score of 150 (76-74) after firing a 74 in the second round of action. Tom Hoge (Fargo, N.D. | Fargo South H.S.) is two strokes behind his TCU teammate at 151 (80-71) after posting the lowest round of the day among the field while sitting tied for eighth overall at the Columbia Invitational.
"Scott really had a solid round, and it's good to see him in the hunt for the tournament title. Hoge had an incredible round, and he was actually 4-under-par heading into the last three holes of action, but kind of struggled at the end. He's playing some terrific golf, and it's good to see him playing so well," added Montigel.
Travis Woolf (Fort Worth, Texas | Paschal H.S.) currently sits tied for 20th overall as the Fort Worth product posted a two-day score of 155 (78-77) while James Sacheck (The Woodlands, Texas | Zionsville H.S.) is tied for 37th overall after posting a score of 159 (78-81) after two rounds of action.
The 19th-ranked Frogs will head into the final round of action with sights set on their second consecutive tournament crown after claiming The Prestige at PGA West last week. If the Frogs can close out the tournament with a victory - it will be the third time in the last four seasons that the Purple and White have recorded at least two tournament titles in the same season.
The Frogs will conclude their fall campaign with the final round of the Columbia Invitational on Sunday (Oct. 26) at the Galloway National Golf Club in Atlantic City, N.J.
