Fort Worth, Texas - UNLV snapped the TCU men's basketball program's six-game home winning streak as the Runnin' Rebels came away with a 70-58 victory over the Horned Frogs on Wednesday evening at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Wink Adams proved to be the biggest thorn in the side of the Frogs as the UNLV guard connected on a game-high 25 points - including five three-pointers that came during critical stretches of the contest where the Purple and White got within striking distance. Adams also finished with five assists, three rebounds and one steal in 37 minutes of court time.
Adams connected on his first trey of the game at the 14:50 mark when he allowed the Runnin' Rebels to take an 11-4 advantage on the scoreboard, but the Frogs were able to cut the lead down to one point on several occasions during the opening frame.
However - the Purple and White failed to capitalize on several opportunities to take control of the scoreboard and found themselves down by one point at 27-26 after Keion Mitchem (Rochester, N.Y./Rochester East H.S.) connected on a trey with 3:37 remaining in the frame.
Kendall Wallace connected on a pair of three-pointers and Matt Shaw added a monstrous dunk to close the frame for the Runnin' Rebels as UNLV held a six-point advantage at intermission by a 35-29 margin.
In the second half of action, the three-point shooting touch of Adams came alive as the UNLV guard connected on four of his five treys during the final frame. The Frogs were able to cut into the Runnin' Rebels' lead by nine, nine and six points during the second half of action, but every time TCU got within striking distance, Adams came up with the big three-pointer to give the visiting squad some comfort.
The Frogs were able to get within six points at the 8:31 mark when a pair of free throws by Neiman Owens (Channelview, Texas/Channelview H.S.) set the score at 53-47, but Adams connected on a three-pointer in UNLV's next possession to push the lead back to nine points.
After extending the lead to double digits to 12 points following a three-pointer by forward Joe Darger, the Purple and White was never able to get within a 10-point margin on the scoreboard as the Frogs dropped a 70-58 decision on their home court.
Brent Hackett (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.) finished with a team-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go along with two assists and two steals in 36 minutes of action. The TCU senior needs only 19 points to become the 28th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark in his Purple and White career.
Kevin Langford (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) collected his 17th consecutive double-digit scoring performance as the TCU forward finished with 17 points - including a career-high 9-of-9 from the charity stripe - to go along with four rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
Mitchem added nine points - all coming on three-pointers in the first half - while Mike Scott (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) dished out five assists in 14 minutes of action.
With the victory, the Runnin' Rebels improved their overall record to 16-4 and 5-1 in Mountain West Conference action while the Frogs dropped to 11-8 and 3-3 in league play.
The Frogs will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 2) when the Purple and White squares-off against the Air Force Academy at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off start.
