
TCU drops a heartbreaker at Rice, 1-0

HOUSTON, Texas - TCU outshot Rice, 19-18, but dropped a 1-0 double overtime match to the Owls on Friday night at the Rice Soccer Stadium.
TCU and Rice battled to a 0-0 draw in the first half. The Horned Frogs outshot the Owls, 9-8, for the half and squandered several missed opportunities on the offensive side of the field.
Michelle Nguyen, a sophomore from Richardson, looked to put TCU on the board, but watched as her shot sailed high early in the half. Sophomore Lizzy Karoly followed with a shot in the 28th minute, but couldn't find the back of the net.
For the half, Kelsey Walters posted the first half shutout by stopping two shots-on-goal.
TCU's Jackie Torda opened the second period looking to break the tie, but failed to connect on two consecutive shots early in the half. Sophomore Anna Paulson tried to find the back of the net 30 minutes into the half, but couldn't beat Owl goalkeeper Meghan Erkel.
With 13 minutes remaining in the half, Chelsea White tried to put TCU on the board, but watched as her shot was saved by Erkel.
Jackie Torda looked to give the Horned Frogs the victory off an assist by Karoly with 2 minutes remaining in the contest, but her shot sailed over the goal.
Following a scoreless first overtime period, Kate Edwards of Rice beat Walters off a penalty kick to win the game for the Owls.
Overall, Torda led the Horned Frog offensive attack with five shots, while both Karoly and Cody chipped in with four apiece.
On defense, Walters had a solid outing as she saved six shots on the night, while Erkel stopped nine balls.
TCU moved to 1-2-0 on the year, while Rice improved to 2-0-1.
The Horned Frogs will next be in action Tuesday against UT-San Antonio. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
