FORT WORTH, Texas - For the 18th straight season, the TCU men's golf team will be participating in the postseason, as the NCAA selection committee announced that the Horned Frogs are the ninth seed in next week's 27-team NCAA Central Regional. TCU is one of fewer than 20 schools nationally to reach the postseason every year since 1990.
The Central Regional will be contested May 17-19 at the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club (par 72, 7,601 yards) in Sugar Grove, Ill. The 27-team regional features the following schools (in order of seeding): Alabama, Oklahoma State, Lamar, Texas A&M, Louisville, Tennessee, Tulsa, Texas, TCU, Michigan State, Minnesota, Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, Purdue, Wichita State, SMU, Baylor, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Illinois State, Western Illinois, Siena and Texas Southern.
"We're excited to be competing at the NCAA Regionals again," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "We have played a tough regular season schedule to prepare ourselves for this tournament and we're looking forward to three days of very competitive golf."
The young Horned Frogs are currently ranked 31st nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings after playing the country's 22nd most difficult schedule. Only senior Drew Stoltz and sophomore Jon McLean have previous NCAA tournament experience. Sophomores Robby Ormand and Jesse Speirs, as well as freshman Travis Woolf, will be making their debuts.
The top 10 teams from each of the three regional sites, as well as the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams, will advance to the 2007 NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club's Gold Course (par 71, 6,817 yards) in Williamsburg, Va. TCU has advanced through the regional and into the NCAA Championships 10 times since 1991.
Six of the nine Mountain West Conference schools earned regional berths. In addition to TCU, the other MWC institutions include: UNLV (No. 3 seed in West), BYU (No. 6 seed in West), San Diego State (No. 16 seed in West), New Mexico (No. 17 seed in West) and Colorado State (No. 19 seed in West). Live scoring of each regional will be available on www.golfstat.com.
