TUCSON, Ariz. - Robby Ormand became TCU's sixth individual conference medalist in the past 20 years after the sophomore was victorious in a two-man, sudden-death playoff Saturday afternoon at the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships. He joins an impressive list of Horned Frog champions that includes PGA Tour star and U.S. Ryder Cup member J.J. Henry.
Ormand, a native of Austin, began the day in a three-way tie for the individual lead. He shot an even-par 71 to force a playoff with San Diego State sophomore Adam Porzak at 6-under. The two men re-played the 18th hole, and Ormand made par, while Porzak bogeyed after hitting his tee shot into the water.
Ormand's previous best finish was a tie for 16th at the National Invitational Tournament, which was played on the same course earlier in the month. He earned all-conference mention for his efforts.
"I'm really proud of the way Robby competed," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "He is a very talented kid, and he battles hard every time he steps on the first tee. His hard work really paid off."
As a team, 28th-ranked TCU (854) placed third after shooting a final-round 285 (+1) at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort's Catalina Course (par 71, 7,136 yards). No. 17 BYU (846) won the tournament by one stroke over sixth-ranked BYU (847).
Sophomore Jesse Speirs earned a share of sixth place after a 1-over 72. He completed the event with a 211 (-2) to register his top career collegiate finish. His previous best effort was a tie for eighth at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate earlier this spring.
Freshman Travis Woolf finished the day where he started, in a share of 17th place. He posted a 1-under 70 to wind up with a 54-hole sum of 216 (+3). It was the third time in six career tournaments that the Fort Worth native has garnered a top-20 finish.
Drew Stoltz had his best effort of the three-day event, as he carded a 1-over 72. The senior, who had placed among the top 10 in the past two league tournaments, tied for the 26th position with an 8-over total of 221.
TCU had a strong final round, especially considering the Horned Frogs had to count all four players' last-day scores after sophomore Jon McLean was forced to withdraw prior to the round due to illness.
"We played well all tournament long," Montigel said. "This is an outstanding golf conference, and we really hung in, especially today when we were down a player. These five guys will have another chance to prove themselves at the NCAA Regionals in a few weeks. We'll be excited to get back out there."
