Women's tennis loses heartbreaker in semifinals of MWC Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The No. 38 TCU women's tennis team's comeback attempt fell just short on Friday against No. 56 UNLV, falling 4-2 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship. The loss dropped the Horned Frogs to 17-10 overall and 8-2 in the MWC, while improving UNLV to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
"It was a close match today and we came up just a little short," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "As usual, we fought very hard and played a team that's played us close before, and we knew that we would have a battle on our hands. We have to give UNLV credit for fighting hard and winning the battle."
The Frogs gained a doubles win at the No. 2 position, as Ana Cetnik and Kewa Nichols teamed up to defeat UNLV's Nikol Dimitrova and Linda Tempelfelde, 8-2. TCU would go on to drop matches at the remaining two positions to go down 1-0.
No. 85 Anna Sydorska led off singles play with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kristina Nedeltcheva at the No. 2 position.
The Frogs went down 3-1 after dropping matches at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, before No. 54 Cetnik defeated Dimitrova 6-4, 6-2, to bring the Frogs within one point.
The remaining two matches both went into third sets, as TCU had to win both to clinch the victory.
Nichols fell in a gutsy performance to Tempelfelde at the No. 4 position, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, as UNLV clinched the match. Andrea Morgado was deadlocked with Alisa Razina, 4-6, 6-2, 5-5, when the match was decided.
The Frogs will learn their postseason fate on May 1 when the NCAA selection show airs.
