TCU shoots past San Diego State, 78-61

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After struggling to find its shot in two consecutive losses, the TCU women's basketball team erased its shooting woes by making 52.4 percent of its shots en route to a convincing 78-61 victory over San Diego State on Wednesday at Cox Arena.
The win gave TCU (20-9, 10-5 Mountain West Conference) its 20th victory for the sixth time in the last seven seasons and gave San Diego State (12-14, 5-1 MWC) just its fourth home loss in 15 games.
"We are proud of getting our 20th victory and we know they (San Diego State) are tough at home, having lost just one other home game in conference this season," head coach Jeff Mittie said."
TCU's field-goal percentage was its second-highest of the season, as the Lady Frogs scored 29 points off 23 San Diego State turnovers and led by as many as 27 points in claiming their fifth straight win over the Aztecs.
Individually, Hanna Biernacka and Adrianne Ross led TCU with 18 points, while Jenna Lohse chipped in with a season-best 15 points. Ross also had a team-high eight rebounds. Lohse's 15 points came on the heels of a career-best nine rebounds at New Mexico.
Holding a 48-33 lead early in the second half, TCU put the clamps on the game with a 10-0 run, which gave TCU its largest lead of the game at 58-33 with 13:18 to play. A balanced scoring attack would help TCU extend its lead to as many as 27 points, 64-37, with 9:55 to play.
San Diego State was led by Shanna Demus, who totaled 14 points. The Aztecs shot 43.1 percent from the floor.
After taking an 8-0 run and 39-26 lead into the locker room, the Lady Frogs continued to build on their run in the second half by scoring the first three point of the half to take a 42-26 lead with 19:09 to play. TCU led 50-33 with 15:50 to play after hitting 5-of-8 shots to start the half.
Trailing 11-10 with 13:44 to play, a layup by Lorie Butler-Rayford ignited a 15-4 run that gave TCU a 25-15 lead. During the run, six different players made field goals. However, San Diego State quickly answered TCU's run with an 11-2 run that cut the Lady Frogs' lead to three, 29-26.
Leading by three with 3:06 to play in the first half, a jumper by Biernacka sparked an 8-0 run by TCU to end the half, which gave the Lady Frogs a 39-26 lead at the break.
TCU made 50 percent of its shots in the first half, finishing 16-of-32 from the floor. Biernacka led the Frogs with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. San Diego State shot 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from the floor and was led by Demus' seven points.
TCU's 39 first-half points were the most since scoring 43 at Colorado State on Feb. 7.
TCU will return home on Saturday to host BYU at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
