FORT WORTH--TCU broke through against a ranked opponent Tuesday, upending previously unbeaten No. 20/23 Oklahoma State, 97-63, at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Lorie Butler-Rayford scored a career-high 30 points while helping lead the Lady Frogs to their most complete performance of the season.TCU improved to 5-6 this season, with all five wins coming at the DMC. OSU dropped the 7-1.
Butler-Rayford pushed the Frogs to a dominant performance by shooting a sizzling 13-for-15 from the field while adding 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. The 6-0 guard/forward nearly matched her previous best scoring total (19) in the first half alone, as she accounted for 18 points in the period to push TCU to a seven-point halftime lead. Butler-Rayford's numbers helped the Frogs shoot 53 percent from the field for the contest.
Helena Sverrisdottir also set a career high with 17 points while draining 6-of-9 shots. She added six boards and four assists. Adrianne Ross followed up Sunday's 38-point effort at Florida with 11 points, as well as a team-high and career-best eight assists to go with four steals. Also reaching double figures was Helen Roden with 10 points.
The Frogs controlled nearly ever aspect of Tuesday's game, especially in the second half, where they out-scored the Cowgirls 51-24. For the game, TCU posted a 44-31 advantage in total rebounds and 46-28 scoring edge in the paint. The squad's defense helped limit OSU to only 37.7 percent shooting, including 29.4 percent in the second period.
Shaunte' Smith led Oklahoma State with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Danielle Green added 12 points and seven rebounds. The Frogs were able to limit Andrea Riley, the Big 12's leading scorer and No. 7 national scorer entering the game (21.8 ppg), to only nine points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field.
Leading by seven points at intermission, TCU set the tone for its second-half romp early out of the gate by opening up a 12-point lead with a 7-2 run. Danielle Nunn followed up free throws by Ross and Micaela Younger with five points on back-to-back possessions. After Nunn sank her first trey of the season from the left wing, Ross made a steal along the OSU baseline. Ross then turned and fired down court to find Nunn for a layup to push the score to 53-41 with 18:09 remaining.
The Frogs coasted to the win from there, building the lead to 20 midway through the second half. A 13-2 run ending with a Younger layup with just over four minutes remaining pushed the lead to 30 for the first time.
The game opened with TCU building up a seven-point lead only eight minutes into the first half. Butler-Rayford scored 11 of the team's first 19 points after hitting 5-of-6 shots from the field, including her first 3-pointer.
The Frogs led for nearly the entire first half before OSU reeled off a seven-point run to knot the score at 32-32 at the 4:50 mark. Emily Carter put TCU back on top with her first 3-pointer, but the Cowgirls came back to take their first lead since the game's opening minutes with buckets on consecutive possessions.
Down 37-35, the Lady Frogs responded with a crucial 11-2 run to end the half. Butler-Rayford scored four points during the stretch on a layup and jumper, and Carter ended the period with an old-fashioned 3-point play after getting fouled on a jumper in the lane with only one second remaining.
TCU takes to the road for its next contest, as it finishes up its pre-Christmas schedule with a 7 p.m. matchup with Houston at the Cougars' Hofheinz Pavilion.
