FORT WORTH, Texas-Kindel Huffman was named the Bob Lilly TCU Athlete of the Year by the Greater Fort Worth Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the Sharing the Victory Banquet earlier this week.
The award is for those student-athletes who exhibit outstanding character on and off the field. Such criteria include: personal integrity, character on and off the playing field, academic achievements and community service.
Huffman has been recognized as the spiritual leader of the team, and is regarded for encouraging other teammates to do their best both in and out of the riding arena.
"I am extremely honored to have received the award because it not only recognizes my ability as an athlete, but also my commitment to being a Christian," Huffman said. "I believe that winning competitions and championships is important, but at the end of the day, my relationship with God, family and friends is what I value most."
Earlier this season, Huffman set a TCU record for highest score in an event, as she scored a 91 in Equitation on the Flat against Stephen F. Austin on October 6. That day she also became the first Frog to earn two MVPs in the same game. Huffman is currently the only Frog to earn points this season in both Western and English events. She is 7-0 in Horsemanship thus far.
Head coach Gary Reynolds has been impressed with Huffman's performance this season. "Kindel personifies the traits that Bob Lilly exhibited-passion for the sport on the field and compassion for people off the field," Reynolds said. "I have learned from Kindel, and have a closer walk with God because of her influence."
Huffman will lead the Frogs back into action Saturday against SMU, as she will compete in TCU's first of two meetings this season against the cross-town rival. All action can be followed on gofrogs.com.
