Horned Frogs win MacDonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Horned Frog men's golf wrapped up competition at the MacDonald Cup, finishing first overall after a final-round score of 288. The Frogs completed the two-day, 72-hole event with a score of 573 (+13) to win the team title.
"I'm really excited for the guys. It was a really challenging golf course and I thought they handled it very well," said head coach Bill Montigel.
Host school Yale placed second, five shots back of the Horned Frogs, while USC Upstate placed third overall with a score of 591 (+31). The 26-team field played at the Course of Yale (par 70, 6,749 yards).
Sophomore Travis Woolf finished the two-day tournament, placing second overall with a two-round total of 143 (+3). He carded a 3-over, final-round 73 to post his third top-20 finish this fall. Freshman Tom Hoge also finished in second place after posting a final-round 69 to bring his two-round total to 143 (+3). Hoge, who saw his first collegiate action this weekend, tied Rutgers' Isaac Lim for the top carded score Sunday.
"I thought both of those guys played really well today," said Montigel. "Travis has had a great fall, while Tom really stepped up in his first college tournament."
Senior Franklin Corpening posted a two-day total of 144 (+4) to finish tied for fourth. Corpening shot a final-round total of 73 (+3).
Robby Ormand finished tied for sixth overall with two other golfers, scoring a final day 73 to bring his two-day total to 145 (+5), while junior James Sacheck followed in ninth, carding an overall total of 146 (+6). On Sunday, Sacheck carded a score of 74 (+4) to close out play in Conneticut.
Overall, the Horned Frogs placed five golfers in the top-20 for the second consecutive day on Sunday. As a team, TCU had five golfers place in the top-10.
The Horned Frogs will next be in action Oct. 15 at the Prestige at PGA West in Palm Desert, Calif.
