FORT WORTH, Texas - After jumping out to an early two game lead, the TCU Horned Frogs held on for the 3-2 (30-23, 30-24, 24-30, 22-30, 15-12) victory over New Mexico Friday night at the University Rec Center. Christy Hudson was one of the many stars for the Frogs tonight as she notched a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs. Defensively, Calli Corley tallied a match-high 21 digs, while Kourtney Edwards racked up five blocks. In the decisive game five, the Horned Frogs stormed out to a 5-0 lead behind the serve of Hudson. An Irene Hester kill on the outside was followed by a Hudson ace to make it 2-0. Hester again drove the ball off the block and Edwards followed with another kill to keep the momentum going. A denial on the outside by Nirelle Hampton/Edwards gave the Frogs the commanding lead.
New Mexico would battle back, pulling within two, 5-3, but that was as close as they would get as the Frogs kept rolling. A solo denial in the middle by Hester gave TCU a commanding 12-7 lead and they held on for the 15-12 win, as a LeMeita Smith cross-court kill sealed the victory.
Game one set the tone for the rest of the match as it was tight early on and then the Frogs took over. Trailing 8-5, Hudson proved tough behind the service line as she served the Frogs within one and Edwards tied it with a kill to the back court.
The set moved to a 17-all tie and that's when the Frogs took over. A kill from Hudson gave the Frogs a lead they would never relinquish. Kills from Edwards and Lauren Otto spurred the Frog attack. Devon Kirk and LeMeita Smith gave the Frogs game point as they stuffed Anna Lehne on the outside and a Lisa Meeter attack error ended the game.
Game two was another battle that saw seven ties and two lead changes. The Frogs carried the momentum from game one into the set as they claimed the 2-0 match lead. Smith broke an 8-8 tie and the Frogs would never trail from there. Hudson made it a four point game, 16-12, forcing a New Mexico timeout.
Leading 20-19, Hampton found her groove behind the line and served the Frogs to a 27-20 lead. Hudson dropped in three kills and combined with Kirk on a block to aid the rally. She blasted her sixth kill of the set to secure the 30-24 game two win.
Out of the intermission, the Lobos worked their way into the match as they won 30-24 in game two. The Frogs hit just .062 in the set and couldn't overcome five aces and four blocks by the Lobos in the set.
In game four, the Frogs hit better, but so did the Lobos as they were able to tie the match at two. New Mexico tallied 20 kills in the set and committed just three errors in the set. TCU hit .227, led by four kills from Hester, but committed seven errors and didn't tally a block setting up the exciting game five.
The Frogs put a total team effort on the court as they tallied 72 kills and had four Frogs in double-digits. Along with Hudson's 16 kills, Smith also tallied 16, followed by 12 from Edwards and 10 from Hester. Four Frogs also reached double figures in digs. Hampton completed her double-double with 17 digs. Katelyn Blackwood pitched in with 10.
