FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a 3-1 (26-30, 22-30, 33-31, 23-30) decision at Wyoming Friday night. TCU was led by LeMeita Smith's 16 kills and Devon Kirk's seven blocks. Calli Corley had a match-high 22 digs.
The Frogs couldn't overcome a dismal start to game one as they dropped the first set by a 30-26 score. Wyoming charged out to a 20-11 lead before the Frogs finally found their groove.
A kill from Kourtney Edwards got the Frogs back on track as they battled hard to get back in the set. Trailing 26-19, Smith started a 6-1 run to pull the Frogs back within two, 27-25. Nirelle Hampton dropped in a kill on an over pass and Smith and Edwards teamed up to stuff a Wyoming attack. Three straight kills from Smith, Hampton and Edwards made it a two-point contest.
Wyoming called a timeout, killing the Frog momentum and they closed out the set on a 3-1 run.
The Frogs gained the early advantage in game two, only to see the Cowgirls come storming back to regain the lead. Back-to-back kills from Hampton and Hester made it a 10-7 Frog led, prompting a Wyoming timeout.
Out of the break, the Cowgirls went on a 9-1 run to take a 16-11 lead and force the Frogs to call a timeout. Christy Hudson broke the run with a kill off the block. It wouldn't be enough as the Cowgirls went on another 5-0 run to open up the game. They went on to win the set by a 30-22 score for the commanding two game lead.
The Frogs stormed out to an early lead in game three, but the Cowgirls battled back to tie the game at nine. Fifteen straight sideouts pushed the game to a 17-all tie.
A block from Hudson and Edwards gave TCU a 19-18 kill and an attack error by the Cowgirls pushed the lead to two. After a quick sideout, the Frogs went on a 4-0 run on two kills from Edwards and another from Smith to make it a 24-19 Horned Frog lead.
A Lauren Otto kill gave the Frogs set point, but the Cowgirls battled back to tie the game at 29-all. The Frogs had two more set points only to see the Cowgirls tie the game. A Smith kill made it 32-31 and a Smith/Kirk denial on the outside sealed the game three win for TCU.
Game four was tight through the first 16 points, but Wyoming took the early advantage on an Angie Hellbaum kill to push the lead to three, 10-7. But three straight hitting errors by the Cowgirls had the Frogs right back in the set, trailing 12-11.
A kill from Lauren Whitney halted the Frog rally and spurred a 5-0 run that broke the contest open. The Frogs would never recover as they dropped a 30-23 decision in game four.
Despite outblocking the Cowgirls, 12-7, the Frogs couldn't overcome 29 kills from Rachel Smith as she led all hitters. TCU got a boost with the return of Lauren Otto to the lineup as she tallied four kills and nine digs after missing four contests.
The Frogs (18-8, 5-5) head home to start a four-game homestand. TCU will play its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday when it hosts Baylor at 7 p.m. in the University Rec Center.
