Frogs complete opening day of CSU Early Bird Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The TCU men and women's swimming and diving teams turned in successful showings on the first day of the CSU Early Bird Invitational at the Edora Pool and Ice Center on Friday.
In their first action of the season, the TCU men recorded eight top-three finishes, including three event wins.
The Frogs dominated in the 50-free event, as Jonathon Berrettini (20.83), Scott McCracken (21.01) and Josh Bagby (21.37) swept the top three positions.
Three Frogs finished in the top six in the 200-IM, led by freshman Edgar Peyro, who turned in a time of 1:58.95 to finish second. Fellow freshman Jeff Gettel placed fourth (2:00.21), followed by Ben Biefnes in sixth position (2:01.07).
TCU was also solid in the 500-free, securing three top-five finishes. Stuart Silver led the way in third place (4:54.97), followed by Jason Hauck (4:56.62) in fourth and Bryce Orser (4:56.79) in fifth.
Junior diver R.J. Hesselberg picked up his first victory of the season in the one-meter dive with a score of 289.20. In his first collegiate action, Kyle Callens recorded a solid fourth-place showing with a score of 260.05.
The men were also impressive in relay action, as the team of Berrettini, Bagby, Jeff Hendricks and McCracken took the top spot in the 200-free relay in a time of 1:24.79. The 400-medley relay team of Berrettini, Cameron Allred, Hauck and Bagby closed out the day with a second-place showing (3:29.33).
On the women's side, freshman Nikki Pappas recorded the highest individual finish of the day with a third-place showing in the 50-free (24.92) out of a field of 39 competitors.
TCU secured three top-eight finishers in the 500-free, led by freshman Jessica Miles' fifth-place time of 5:13.33. Sarah Bardwell and Michelle Pottenger followed in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
Cheryl Townsend and Meredith Grubb recorded solid outings in the 200-IM in a field of 26 participants. Townsend placed seventh with a time of 2:15.16, followed by Grubb in eighth with a time of 2:15.32.
TCU newcomer Nikka Campora highlighted the diving action on Friday, finishing sixth in the three-meter with a score of 219.35 in six dives.
The women also recorded strong outings in the two relay events in the opening day. The 400-medley relay team of Samantha Smith, Katie Rosen, Stephanie Futscher and Mychala Lynch swam to a second-place finish (4:04.05), while the 200-free relay squad of Pappas, Lynch, Natalie Melenric and Grubb opened the day with a third-place showing (1:40.34).
