The TCU men's golf team recorded a three-round tally of 876, including the fourth-best third round score of 291 on the final day of competition, en route to tying for fourth overall at The Prestige at PGA WEST in La Quinta, CA, on Tuesday (Oct. 16).
The Horned Frogs improved by nine spots after their first round of action and finished with a top-five finish for the second consecutive tournament after claiming the title at the MacDonald Cup in their previous appearance.
"I thought that we played a great tournament, and it was a great way to end the fall season," said TCU head men's golf coach Bill Montigel. "We got off to a slow start, but really played strong over the last 36 holes so I'm just very proud of the way that our kids played. We've worked extremely hard this fall, and it was great to see all of the hard work pay off for the kids."
James Sacheck (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville H.S.) was the Horned Frogs' top golfer at The Prestige at PGA WEST as the TCU junior finished with a three-round two-under par score of 214 (72-70-72), including a tally of 70 in the second round of competition, en route to claiming an eighth-place finish.
"James played an outstanding tournament, and this was his second straight top-10 finish. He hit the ball extremely well off of the tee and put himself in position for a lot of birdies over the last two days. I'm really proud of him because he's worked so hard in all areas of his game, and it really showed at this tournament," added Montigel.
Robby Ormand (Austin, TX/James Bowie H.S.) finished with a third-round score of 72 and recorded a 54-hole total of 217 (75-70-72) while finishing the tournament one-over par and a share of 15th-place for the Horned Frogs. Franklin Corpening (Fort Worth, TX/Paschal H.S.) tied for 27th overall as the TCU senior collected a tournament tally of 220 (74-72-74).
Tom Hoge (Fargo, ND/Fargo South H.S.) notched a final round tally of 77 en route to shooting a tournament total of 229 (78-74-77) while tying for 66th overall. TCU teammate Travis Woolf (Fort Worth, TX/Paschal H.S.) recorded his best round of The Prestige at PGA WEST with a 73 on the final 18 holes en route to shooting a final score of 232 (83-76-73) and tying for 75th overall.
The University of North Carolina-Charlotte claimed the tournament title at The Prestige at PGA WEST with a three-round team score of 854 while Stanford (862), University of Central Florida (869), Pepperdine (876) and TCU (876) rounded out the top five.
The Horned Frogs completed their 2007 fall season and will resume competition on the links at UH Hilo Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, HI, on February 6th, 2008.
