
Frogs falter against UNLV

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs fell 3-0 (19-30, 29-31, 18-30) to UNLV Friday night at the University Rec Center. The Frogs were led offensively by LeMeita Smith's 11 kills. Freshman Irene Hester notched her first career double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.In game one, the Rebels came out gunning as they took a commanding 13-7 lead and the Frogs could never recover. UNLV pounded out 18 kills in the set, while the Frogs committed 12 errors to help the Rebels claim the 30-19 game one victory.
Hester led the Frog attackers with four kills and Nirelle Hampton dished out 10 assists as the Frogs hit .225 in the game. The Rebels were firing on all cylinders as they hit .432 in the set. Maria Aladjova and Lauren Miramontes each totaled six kills for the Rebels.
The Frogs had a chance to tie the match at one game apiece as they took a late lead in the second set. With the game knotted at 15, Devon Kirk gave the Frogs the lead with a loud kill off an overpass. UNLV stormed back to regain a 20-17 lead forcing the Frogs to call out timeout.
Out of the break, an attack error by the Rebels spurred a Frog rally that eventually got the game tied at 24. A block from Kirk and Christy Hudson tied the game and a Kirk blast gave the Frogs the lead. TCU went on to build a 28-26 lead on another kill from Kirk forcing a Rebel timeout.
The Rebels squelched the Frog momentum and they closed out the game on a 5-1 run to take the commanding 2-0 lead.
Coming out of the intermission, the Rebels carried the momentum all the way to earn the 30-18 game three victory. The Frogs committed eight attack errors in the set, while the Rebels pounded out 19 kills to earn the sweep.
For the match, TCU hit just .199 while allowing the Rebels to hit .377. Calli Corley led the Frog defensive effort with 17 kills and Loren Barry pitched in with 11. Nirelle Hampton finished with five kills, 33 assists and eight digs.
The Frogs fall to 16-7 on the season and 3-4 in conference play. They will host San Diego State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
