
Matranga takes the lead at MWC Championship

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Catherine Matranga took over the individual lead while TCU shot the tournament's low score in Friday's second round of the Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship in St. George, Utah.Matranga carded a 1-under 71 and is at even-par 144 after 36 holes. The junior from Fort Worth (Paschal High School) is one stroke ahead of New Mexico's Mikaela Backstedt. The Lobos' Py Bengtsson is four strokes back in third with a 4-over 148.
Carrie Morris had a second-round 73 for TCU, while Elin Emanuelsson's 74 put her in a tie for 14th with an 8-over-par 152.
TCU's second round 6-over 294 bettered New Mexico by one stroke for Friday's best team score. The Horned Frogs and Lobos were the only teams to shoot below a 302.
Overall, TCU improved two places to fourth with a 30-over 606. The No. 36 Frogs picked up nine strokes on No. 11 and two-time defending MWC champion UNLV, who tops the field with an 18-over 594. TCU now trails the Rebels by 12 shots. New Mexico is in second, four strokes behind UNLV. The Frogs are only two shots back of BYU (604, +28) for third.
