
Horned Frog swimming squads kick off MWC Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY - The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships with an abbreviated schedule Wednesday at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center. Following three events, the women are in third place with 77 points, while the men are in fourth with 87.
With 105 points, Utah leads the women's competition. The Utes are followed by BYU (94), TCU (77), Colorado State (74), UNLV (71), Wyoming (70), New Mexico (65), Air Force (45) and San Diego State (44). The men's standings read: Utah (104), BYU (94), Wyoming (92), TCU (87), UNLV (80) and Air Force (78).
In the only individual competition of the day, Kelly Seely placed second in the women's 1-meter springboard diving with a score of 280.15. She was less than five points out of first place, which was snared by Utah's Kelsey Patterson (284.35).
In the nightcap event, the women's 800-yard freestyle relay squad of Rikki Covey, Tara Sullivan, Emily Duerringer and Karen Sandifer, landed in third place with a time of 7:30.04. The women's 200-yard medley relay team (Keleigh Wentworth, Maribeth Pottenger, Erica Tate and Leann Cathcart) placed fifth in a time of 1:46.47.
Two men's divers advanced to the finals of the 1-meter event, and Kelly McCain snagged a runner-up finish (299.80) and R.J. Hesselberg placed seventh (254.75). McCain had the highest score in the preliminary round before being edged by Utah's Sterling Richards.
The TCU men's 200 medley relay team of Guillermo Ramirez, Aran Bean, Teylor Arboleda and Scott McCracken placed third with a time of 1:30.50. Meanwhile, the 800 free relay squad of Jason Hauck, Yousif Del Valle, Alejandro Gomez and Jonathon Berrettini, took sixth (6:49.28).
Thursday's competitions will include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay for both the men's and women's teams, as well as the men's 3-meter springboard. The preliminary events begin at 10 a.m. CST and the finals competition start at 6 p.m. Real-time scoring, updated every 30 minutes, is available on the official website of the Mountain West Conference, www.themwc.com.
