Frogs finish in third place at UNLV Winter Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned third place finishes at the UNLV Winter Invitational on Monday, trailing UC-Santa Barbara and UNLV.
On the women's side, Cheryl Townsend swam the 1650-free in a time of 17:19.75 while Keilah Walker recorded a time of 17:36.80 to finish third and fourth, respectively. Townsend grabbed fourth place in the 200-back in a time of 2:06.13 to notch her fifth top-five finish of the Invitational. Lori Birkhead swam in a time of 2:06.67 to finish fifth, and Rikki Covey recorded a clocking of 2:07.92 to finish sixth in the event.
Senior Erica Tate earned third spot in the 100-free with a time of 52.01. On the weekend, Tate slated two second-place finishes and a third-place showing. The 200-breast event saw three Frogs in the top ten, as Katie Rosen finished fourth, followed by Christi Cannon in sixth and Maribeth Pottenger in seventh. Freshman Stephanie Futscher also took a top-five finish, placing fourth in the 200-fly with a time of 2:07.56.
Alejandro Gomez highlighted action for the men as the Caracas, Venezuela, native placed second in the 1650-free. Gomez's time of 15:37.45 qualified as the second-fastest time in school history in the event.
In the 200-back, Guillermo Ramirez slated a third-place finish with a time of 1:49.04, while Jonathon Berrettini swam to a seventh-place showing in a time of 1:54.25. In the 100-free, Scott McCracken recorded a time of 46.13 to place fourth, followed by Yousif Del Valle in fifth (47.18) and Jonathon Berrettini in seventh (47.85). Sophomore Cameron Allred had a stellar showing in the 200-breast, placing third with a time of 2:06.59.
In relay action, the team of Meredith Grubb, Karen Sandifer, Tara Sullivan and Erica Tate recorded a time of 3:32.96 to finish fourth, while the squad of Jonathon Berrettini, Alejandro Gomez, Scott McCracken and Josh Bagby swam the event in a time of 3:03.80 to notch a third-place finish.
The TCU swimmers and divers will kick off the spring season on Jan. 8 in Flagstaff, Ariz., when they face Northern Arizona.
