Frogs complete opening day at UNLV Winter Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished the first day of the UNLV Winter Invitational in third place. The women placed third out of 10 teams, totaling 209 points to trail UC-Santa Barbara (295) and UNLV (240), while the men finished third out of eight teams, with 191 points, trailing UC-Santa Barbara's 295 points and UNLV's 271 points.
The women started off the day with a fourth place finish in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:37.20, and finished with another fourh place showing 400-medley relay (3:56.47).
In the 500-free, sophomore Cheryl Townsend paced the Frogs with a time of 5:03.99 to finish fourth, followed by Tara Sullivan's eighth-place time of 5:06.77. Townsend also led the women in the 200-IM event, finishing third with a time of 2:08.35. Other Frog standouts were Meredith Grubb and Christi Cannon, who finished fourth and sixth in the event, respectively.
Senior Erica Tate continued her stellar performance in the 50-free, finishing second with a time of 23.67. Tate's time of 23.60 in the 50-free preliminary also placed second out of 114 competitors.
The men were also very competitive on Saturday in the relay and individual events. In the 200-free relay, the men placed third with a time of 1:22.85, and finished out the day with a second-place showing in the 400-medley relay (3:21.60).
Distance swimmer Alejandro Gomez swam the 500-free in a time of 4:33.47 to finish third, followed by Jason Hauck, who placed eighth with a time of 4:43.06. Senior Guillermo Ramirez had a strong showing in the 200-IM event, finishing in third with a time of 1:53.15. Other impressive showings came from Jonathon Berrettini and Scott McCracken in the 50-free. Berrettini finished in third with a time of 20.94, while McCracken placed fourth with a time of 21.06. In the 50-free preliminary, McCracken recorded a time of 20.55 to place second out of 73 competitors.
Sophomore R.J. Hesselberg highlighted the diving events for TCU, recording a score of 303.00 in the one-meter dive to finish second. Hannah Hale led the way for the women, scoring a 216.05 in the three-meter dive for tenth spot.
