FORT WORTH, Texas - With the spotlight already on with Senior Day festivities, TCU's four seniors made sure to leave a permanent stamp on TCU's soccer program with a 1-0 victory over San Diego State on Saturday at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
Playing in their final match in a TCU uniform, the quartet of seniors contributed in a big way, as Casey Glass scored the game-winning goal, while goalkeeper Katy Buchanan secured a career-high 10 saves and defenders Breanne Kaldheim and Karissa Hill used an aggressive defensive style to keep San Diego State from scoring. The shut out was TCU's fifth of the year.
After San Diego State (6-11-2, 2-3-2 Mountain West Conference) came out of the gate with a strong offensive attack that produced the first seven shots through the first 20 minutes of the match, TCU (6-8-4, 1-3-3 MWC) was able to spark its offense by gaining longer possessions with the ball.
With the tide of the match shifting toward TCU at the end of the half, the Horned Frogs wasted little time in the second half, as Glass rebounded her shot that had caromed off the cross bar and headed it in for the game-winning goal at the 49:08 mark. Glass' goal was her second of the season.
With a 1-0 lead, TCU was able to rely on its senior-led defense and the goalkeeping by Buchanan to preserve the shutout. The shutout was the third for Buchanan this season.
"All year we've been stressing to the team about the urgency and how every ball has to matter," head coach Dan Abdalla said. "It took a little bit longer for it to sink through, but they worked too hard this year, to have this game go out the back door."
TCU was led by Glass, who had five shots, including two on goal. Michelle Nguyen also contributed four shots.
San Diego State got five shots from Jessica Gordon and four shots from Jessica Girdner.
The win was bittersweet for the Horned Frogs, who just missed out on qualifying for the Mountain West Conference Tournament. TCU entered the day sitting in seventh place and were in need of a victory and a win by Air Force over New Mexico to setup a tiebreaker between the Lobos and Horned Frogs for the final qualifying spot. Unfortunately a 3-0 win by New Mexico dashed TCU's postseason hopes.
