Frogs win second straight, top UT-Pan Am, 3-0

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frog volleyball squad picked up their second straight sweep with a 3-0 (30-14, 30-20, 30-27) win Saturday afternoon at the University Rec Center. TCU turned in another strong offensive performance with a .402 hitting percentage. Defensively, it turned in 11.5 blocks en route to its 16th win of the season. Anna Vaughn paced the Frogs with 16 kills and nine blocks.After battling through two ties and one lead change in the early part of game one, the Frogs settled in and opened up a large lead. With the Frogs trailing 7-4, Loren Barry got them going with back-to-back aces, giving them an 8-7 lead. The teams traded points before taking a large lead behind the serving of Calli Corley. Kills by Vaughn and Emily Allen and a block by Vaughn and Agi Nemeth gave TCU a 13-9 lead.
A mini-run by the Broncs made it a 14-11 game. Allen put the Frogs on her back and they took a commanding 22-12 lead. Another run by the Frogs, this time behind the serving efforts of Nemeth, TCU was able to close out the set with a 30-14 win. A Kourtney Edwards blast ended a set in which the Frogs hit a blistering .536 and registered 6.5 blocks.
Game two saw the Frogs race out to an early 14-8 lead. Allen served the Frogs to a 5-1 lead on kills by Vaughn and Hampton. The Broncs battled back to pull the game within three, 9-6, but Hampton extended the lead, helping the Frogs to a 4-0 run with her strong serve.
The Frogs cruised in the set as the bench contributed with two kills, one each by Devon Kirk and Gabi McHugh, and three digs. TCU scored six points off Barry's serve as they sailed to the 30-20 victory. A Vaughn blast gave TCU the 2-0 match lead. TCU hit .333 in the set and tallied four more blocks.
Just like the previous night, the Frogs played catch-up in game three as UT-Pan Am opened up a 6-3 lead thanks to three kills by Heather Bravo, who finished with 20 for the match. TCU trailed for most of the match before evening things up at 16 on a Vaughn kill.
The lead would see-saw back and forth before the Frogs grabbed control on a kill by Edwards, giving them a 22-21 lead. Kills from Allen and LeMeita Smith built the Frog lead to 25-22 and Vaughn's 16 kill of the night gave TCU the hard-fought 30-27 victory.
TCU improves to 16-6 on the season with the victory. The Frogs return to action on Friday night when they host Colorado State. The match will be aired live on KTCU 88.7 FM. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
