FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's soccer team opened up the 2005 season with a 4-0 shut out victory over Texas Tech Friday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal. Four different Frogs tallied goals, while Angie Nickens and Caroline Starns each picked up three points each. The Frogs put forth a balanced attack, scoring two goals in each half. The win is the first for Dan Abdalla in his coaching debut at TCU.
The chances for the Frogs came early and often as they took advantage of a young Texas Tech squad. Forty-five seconds into the game TCU earned a corner kick. They were unable to capitalize on the corner, but kept the pressure on.
In the 11th minute, Karissa Hill put the Frogs first goal of the year on the board. She went one-on-one with Red Raider goalkeeper Megan Knauss, who failed in her attempt to smother the Hill shot. Hill took advantage of the miscue and shot it in the open net for the 1-0 lead.
The Frogs kept the offensive pressure on and hit paydirt in the 20th minute, making it a 2-0 game as Nickens scored her first goal of the regular season. Caroline Starns threaded the pass to a streaking Nickens, who beat her defender and blasted it past Knauss for the 2-0 lead.
The game got more physical in the second half as the tempo picked up. Seven minutes into the half, TCU got a 3-0 lead on Caroline Starns' first career goal. Nickens returned the favor, delivering a nice pass to Starns racing in on goal. Starns shot it high over Knauss' head for the goal.
TCU put the game out of reach with its fourth goal of the contest. K.D. Waters battled with her defender deep in the offensive zone. She came away with the ball and delivered a perfect feed to a waiting Kim Thompson who sent the ball sailing into the upper half of the goal.
The Red Raiders best chance of the game was stymied by a terrific defensive play by Hill. Lauren Fricks took a shot that Ashley Pierret blocked out to the top of the box. The ball deflected off a defender and over Pierret's head. It was drifting toward the goal, when Hill deflected it out of bounds.
In her lone half of work, Katy Buchanan faced three shots but wasn't forced to make any saves. Ashley Pierret completed the shutout, blanking the Red Raiders in the second half. Pierret made three stops in the half.
"I was impressed with our bite in the final third of the game," said Abdalla. "We need to stay much more connected. Overall, I'm very pleased and our finish was solid."
The Frogs will complete the season-opening homestand on Sunday when the No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies come to town. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal.
