The TCU volleyball team got the 2005 season underway with an intra-squad scrimmage tonight at the University Rec Center. The purple squad won both games of the two-game match 30-25, 30-18.
Senior Erin Estep led the way for the purple squad as she tallied seven kills on nine attacks for a .778 percentage. The senior middle-blocker displayed excellent leadership and communication skills during the match directing her teammates on where to be positioned.
The first match remained even throughout the opening stages until Estep made back-to-back kills to give the purple an 18-15 advantage. After an attack error by Talaya Whitfield of the purple squad, the team went on to outscore the white squad 12-10 for the first-game victory.
Sophomore Loren Barry got the second game off to a quick start as she blasted two-straight aces as part of a 5-0 purple rally. The white squad responded with a rally of their own headed by sophomore LeMeita Smith, who made two kills to position the white within one point.
After several exchanges in scoring, junior Anna Vaughn broke the game wide open with a couple of impressive serves. The junior outside hitter finished the night with seven kills and five digs.
A new addition to the Horned Frog team, freshman Nirelle Hampton shined in the scrimmage as she totaled 24 assists. The Gainesville, Fla., product also tacked on seven digs to her stats.
The Frogs will have their official start to the season on Saturday night when they entertain the Oklahoma Sooners. Prior to the match, a volleyball clinic will be held for children ages 6-16. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
