LEXINGTON, Ky. – TCU volleyball's Evan Hendrix and Alice Volpe were recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association with AVCA All-Southwest Region Honors on Tuesday morning.
It marks the first career All-Region Honors for the Horned Frog duo. Hendrix was one of 14 members voted to the First Team, while Volpe earned an Honorable Mention nod. It comes after the sophomores were key in helping lead TCU to its first back-to-back 20-win regular seasons since 2008-09 and a program record six victories over ranked opponents, including No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Texas A&M.
Hendrix, a unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection, continues to add postseason honors to her name after a breakout sophomore season. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native made a massive jump, racking up 543 total kills after only tallying 96 as a freshman. This year, she broke the sophomore school records for kills (Dominika Szabo, 473 in 2002) and points (Kourtney Edwards, 504.0 in 2007) and cemented her name in the history books as the fifth Horned Frog to eclipse 500 kills in a single season.
Playing one of the toughest schedules in the country that featured 16 matches against ranked opponents, Hendrix shined, posting double-digit kills in 29 of TCU's 32 contests, including 11 with 20 or more. In conference play specifically, she led the Big 12 with 4.96 kills per set through the 18-match slate. Added to the AVCA National Player of the Year Watchlist, Hendrix ranked top 10 in the country in total kills (543, eighth) and points (592.0, ninth).
Volpe wrapped up her sophomore campaign leading the team with 476 digs, the eighth most in a single season in school history and second most by a sophomore. One of the top liberos in the Big 12 conference, she averaged 3.90 digs per set and tallied double-digit digs in 29 of the Frogs' 32 matches, including the final 19 of the season. Volpe registered a career-best 24 digs in the TCU's regular season finale at Houston (Nov. 29) and 23 digs in the win over Wyoming (Sept. 11), the third most in a three-set match in TCU history. The Cypress, Texas, native also added 153 assists and 23 aces over the course of the year.
Hendrix and Volpe are both eligible for the AVCA All-America Team, which will be announced Dec. 19 ahead of the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship.
