McLean Reaches Sweet 16 at Prestigious Western Amateur

FORT WORTH, Texas (July 29, 2005) - Incoming TCU freshman golfer Jon McLean advanced to the Sweet 16 match play at his first-ever Western Amateur on Friday after posting a 1-under round of 69 in the fourth and final stroke play round. McLean, arguably the most heralded freshman ever to ink with the Horned Frogs, placed tied for eighth among 156 participants in the 72-hole competition to reach the weekend.
His steady play included cards of 71-71-70-69=281 (+1). In Saturday's first round of match play, McLean will face 48-year-old veteran Danny Green, who has reached the Sweet 16 for a record ninth time in his career and won the 1997 title. Tee time is set for 8:10 a.m. (ET) at the Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. McLean is just the third TCU player ever to reach the Western Amateur's match play, joining former Frogs Adam Rubinson and Colby Beckstrom.
McLean has enjoyed an outstanding summer while playing one of the top amateur schedules in the country. He placed third at the Sahalee Players' Championship and tied for 43rd at the Porter Cup. The 18-year-old has also competed in the Monroe Invitational and Northeast Amateur. In August, the native of Weston, Fla., will compete in the 105th U.S. Amateur.
In 2004, McLean was one of 10 players nationally to earn first-team Rolex Junior All-America honors from the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). His 2004 summer campaign was highlighted by a victory at the renowned Dixie Amateur. He also won two events on the FCWT Junior Golf Tour, the USF and the World Woods. In addition, McLean registered a pair of runner-up finishes at junior events, the AJGA Thunderbird and the AJGA FootJoy. For his play, he earned a spot on the AJGA Canon Cup team and helped the East claim victory at the annual event, which features the nation's top 20 junior boys and top 20 junior girls.
McLean was ranked 13th nationally according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Boys' Rankings. In 2003, McLean won three junior tournaments, the Texas-Oklahoma, the AJGA Hartford and the Golfweek/Precept. He is currently ranked 28th in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings.
