Fort Worth, Texas - Two Horned Frog freshmen were honored by Louisville Slugger as they were named Freshmen All-Americans. Andrew Walker was one of four catchers to earn All-American status, while Matt McGuirk was one of just two designated hitters to be honored. Both were named to the Conference USA All-Freshman squad earlier this season. The Frogs have begun a rich tradition of freshmen, garnering five freshmen All-American selections over the last two seasons.
In his first season in the Purple and White, Walker batted .310 with 11 home runs. His .580 slugging percentage led the squad, while his 11 homers were second on the team. He also drove in 38 runs. He appeared in 49 games and made 43 starts, splitting time as a catcher and designated hitter. He was excellent behind the plate, committing just two errors all season to finish with a .988 fielding percentage.
McGuirk stormed into the lineup in the middle of the conference season. In a two-week span, McGuirk homered seven times and earned Player of the Week honors. Despite battling a sore shoulder all season, McGuirk made 47 appearances and 41 starts. He finished his freshman campaign with a .317 batting average and drove in 38 runs.
Last season, Chad Huffman, Shelby Ford and German Duran earned Freshman All-American honors from Louisville Slugger.
