FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU right-handed pitcher Lance Broadway is one of 13 collegiate baseball players to be named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award. The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate player. Earlier last week, Broadway was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Roger Clemens award and one of 16 semifinalists for the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy. He is just one of five collegiate players to be a semifinalist for all three awards.
Broadway has emerged as one of the country's most productive pitchers this spring, tying for the national lead in victories with 13. He put together a streak of 36 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run earlier in the year and currently owns a 1.76 ERA, a league-best in C-USA. The Grand Prairie native has fanned a league-best 135 batters this season. Both the wins total and strike out total are new single-season records at TCU. He has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week four times this season and has earned Pro-Line Cap National Player of the Week once.
Joining Broadway from Conference USA as a semifinalist for all three awards is Brian Bogusevic of Tulane.
The other 11 finalists include: Ryan Patterson of LSU, Cesar Carillo of Miami (Fla.), Trevor Crowe of Cal State-Fullerton, Jacoby Ellsbury or Oregon State, Alex Gordon of Nebraska, Tennessee's Luke Hochevar, Ole Miss' Brian Pettway, Texas' Seth Johnston, Ian Kennedy of USC and Shane Robinson of Florida State.
The CBF National Selection Committee will narrow the list to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals, with an announcement in Omaha on Thursday, June 16, 2005. The finalists, with their head coaches and parents, will be invited to Lubbock, TX, for a golf tournament and a schedule of related activities, in addition to the award banquet. The trophy and winners will become part of the permanent display in the College Baseball Hall of Fame Museum under construction in Lubbock. The annual award banquet will be held on Thursday, June 30th at 7 p.m., and hosted at the United Spirit Arena, on the campus of Texas Tech University.
