FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU Women's Tennis Head Coach Dave Borelli announced the signing of Karine Ionesco to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. The junior college All-American will compete for the Horned Frogs beginning in spring 2006."Karine is someone I saw play three years ago, and I wanted her then," Borelli said. "She has a reputation for having a great attitude and is very athletic. Karine is a hard worker and epitomizes what our program looks for in a student-athlete. She's a great kid and will fit in well with our group."
The Montreal, Canada, native Ionesco spent the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She helped Broward win the 2004 National Junior College Athletic Association championship in her first season and was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American in singles and doubles. She ended the season ranked No. 1 in singles and was second in doubles with Leigh Shelton.
Ionesco saw her team finish third at the 2005 NJCAA Tournament. Individually, she ended the year ranked ninth in singles and was first in doubles with Marta Simic. Ionesco took home ITA All-America praise in singles and doubles as well.
Other collegiate highlights for Ionesco include winning her singles flight at the 2004 NJCAA Tournament and reaching the doubles final that same year. She also won the junior college division of the 2003 ITA National Small College Championship singles draw and the doubles in 2003 and 2004.
Prior to attending Broward, Ionesco earned a singles ranking as high as 693rd in the world coming in August 2002. That same year in April, she reached a career-high of 236th in doubles.
