FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team fought a tough battle, but fell to UNLV in four games on Saturday afternoon at the University Rec Center. Sophomore Talaya Whitfield recorded 26 digs for her fifth 20+ digs performance of the season.
The Frogs jumped into the action quick and dashed out to an early, 9-5, lead. The Rebels battled back, but sophomore LeMeita Smith continued to apply pressure and tallied three kills. Freshman Nirelle Hampton did an excellent job of deciding when to swing at the ball and set, helping the Frogs keep the UNLV defense guessing.
Whitfield, sophomore Loren Barry and junior Calli Corley combined for three service aces in the first game as the Frogs captured a 31-29 victory.
UNLV came back in game two and began to get Lauren Miramontes into the action. The sophomore middle-blocker tallied four kills and help the Rebels put away the Frogs, 30-19.
With the match score knotted, 1-1, the Frogs came out fighting and freshman Gabi McHugh stepped in to make some big kills and helped the Frogs develop a small two-point advantage, 17-15. UNLV made a strong run to take the game and move into position to win the match.
The Frogs continued to make good swings on the ball but UNLV's Jada Walker dug every ball that came her way and finished the match with 25.
Head Coach Prentice Lewis turned to Whitfield to help the Frogs offense get back on track and the sophomore libero switched her jersey and moved to the outside-hitter position. The Lakewood, Calif., product quickly tallied three kills on as many swings but the Rebels continued to deny the kill opportunities.
UNLV finished the match with 96 digs. TCU had one of their best dig performances of the season finishing with 80.
Junior Agi Nemeth stepped up big for the Frogs throughout the match as she finished with 12 digs and seven kills. The Gyor, Hungary, product also got her hands onto half off a block.
TCU fell to 15-15 on the season and 3-11 in Mountain West Conference play. The Frogs will head to Fort Collins, Colo., on Tuesday for a conference contest with Colorado State and Laramie, Wyo., on Wednesday to face Wyoming. Match times are slated for 8 p.m. (CDT).
