The TCU volleyball team fell in five games (29-31, 23-30, 31-29, 30-25, 12-15) to New Mexico despite a valiant effort after trailing 2-0. Junior Anna Vaughn totaled 22 kills in the match and sophomore Talaya Whitfield eclipsed the 20-dig plateau with 25.
Game one was tight throughout the stat columns, with both teams recording 15 kills and five aces. Vaughn led with five kills and senior Erin Estep was one behind with four as the Frogs built a late 28-26 lead. New Mexico benefited from TCU errors to steal the game 31-29.
The Lobos were strong in game two and powered to a 30-23 victory.
After establishing a 2-0 match lead, New Mexico looked to sweep the Frogs and with a 29-26 lead, it appeared evident. However, as Frog fans have come to expect this team would not quit and rallied to win 31-29. Vaughn and Estep combined for nine of the 16 kills made by the Frogs. The third game was filled with action as the teams had long rallies, made impossible digs and powerful kills.
Riding the momentum, the resilient Frogs took the fourth game. Similar to the night before versus Air Force, TCU got solid contribution all around the court. Senior Hayley Harmon made five kills in the game and Whitfield made six digs.
New Mexico rallied to stop the Frogs surge and take game five by three points.
Freshman Nirelle Hampton set a new career-high in assists with 55 and was one dig short of recording a double-double after posting a triple-double the night before.
With the loss, TCU fell to 11-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The team will play its next match on Tuesday at the University Rec Center when Wyoming comes to town. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
