| Freshman forward Caroline Starns will chat about TCU soccer. |
| TCU Moderator: Welcome fans, we're going to get started a little early. Caroline has a class she needs to get to at 7:00. So, without further ado, here we go. |
| Angela (Plano): What has the transition from high school to college soccer been like for you? |
| Caroline Starns: It's been a positive transition, but at the same time it's been a very intense transition. Coming from being a defender for my club team to a forward at TCU has been challenging, but fun. As a defender, I was more of a team player, trying to get the ball up to my forwards. As a forward, you have to have more confidence at going at players and pushing the ball towards the goal and taking shots. |
| Fort Worth: With two older sisters who have played D-I soccer, are there ever any competitions or challenges to see who is better. Or are you all about helping each other out?? |
| Caroline Starns: Of course there is competiton between us, but it is all in good fun. Having older sisters that have both played college soccer is so helpful. I often ask for their advice not only about on the field stuff, but school as well.
Coming in I was really nervous about, but having both of them already having gone through being a freshman on a team was a good support system for me. They gave me advice about managing soccer and school. |
| Clyde, Indianapolis, Indiana: How do all the freshmen like TCU and the new coaching staff? |
| Caroline Starns: When we first heard about the coaching change we were a little nervous, but after coming in and meeting Dan and the rest of the coaching staff, the nervousness went away.
Dan is always there to push us to do our best and to work our hardest. His enthusiasm and energy on the sidelines is contagious and instills a desire to win in us. Dewi is always there to support us and give us a little advice on the side. He is always ready to play with us during practice especially a 5-v-2 game. Michelle is really helpful to the offensive players having been a member of a successful program like Texas A&M. She has experience and is always ready with some advice to help us out. |
| Plano West: How do the boys at TCU compare to the ones you went to high school with in Arlington? |
| Caroline Starns: Definitely better. College boys show you that they are dedicated to doing something with their lives.
It's especially fun for us being athletes. it gives us a chance to bond with other athletes from male sports over our trials and tribulations of being student athletes. And plus, they are really cute. |
| Midland: Who from your family has been most supportive of your career? |
| Caroline Starns: All of them have helped me out in different way. My father has been extremely supportive. He is always pushing me to do better, but is always there for me no matter what.
My sisters have been supportive for specific game help. They have offered great advice to me about being a student athlete and the importance of success not only on the field but in the classroom. My mom is helpful because she doesn't talk to me about soccer. She talks to me about the typical mom things, like how my day was and how I am feeling. That gives me some balance in my life. |
| FW: With soccer basically becoming a job, and a high demand from the classrooms, is it easy to find time for the really cute guys there? |
| Caroline Starns: You can always make time for cute, nice boys. Some of them happen to be in study hall, so you can kill two birds with one stone.
But seriously, if you manage your time well, there is always time for a social life. It's important to make out a weekly schedule so you know when you are going to study, eat and practice. Once all the hard work is done, there is time to play. |
| Betsy (Los Angeles): What is the academic side of TCU like? |
| Caroline Starns: Every professor I have is more than willing to help any time I need it. It doesn't matter to them if I am a student athlete or not, they treat me just the same as everyone else. Even though they treat us the same, they are willing to work with us when we have to go out of town or if we are struggling with something.
The Academic Service people are extremely helpful, considering we are freshmen coming into a completely new environment. They help us manage our time. They give us a weekly game plan to make sure we get everything done. |
| Dallas: Who is your favorite person on your team?? |
| Caroline Starns: That's a hard question. I don't really have a favorite person. I like everybody. It varies for me on a daily basis. It depends on the day and who was funniest in practice. I have to, of course, say my freshmen girls are my favorites.I hang out with Sara Schneider and Courtney Brill a lot. |
| TCU Moderator: Alright, Caroline has to head off to class. Thanks for the questions and we'll visit with you next week. |
