Volleyball suffers setback at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- After falling behind 2-0, the TCU volleyball team battled hard but fell short to San Diego State (22-30, 28-30, 30-28, 30-21) Sunday afternoon at Peterson Gym. Sophomore Talaya Whitfield led the Frogs with an 11 kill, 10 dig performance for her fourth double-double of the season.
The Frogs came out fiery in game one and battled the Aztecs to a 22-22 tie. Senior Hayley Harmon tallied four kills in the early going and Whitfield, wearing the libero jersey, picked up two digs. After a timeout, the Aztecs made a run to put the Frogs away.
Game two began similar in fashion with neither team able to gain the advantage. Head coach Prentice Lewis made a roster move and switched Whitfield to outside hitter to provide an offensive spark. The Lakewood, Calif., product delivered and killed four balls.
TCU erased a 27-24 deficit late in game two to take a 28-27 lead. San Diego State drew up a play and used two questionable calls to take the game. Harmon continued to execute on the outside and added three kills to her total. Junior Calli Corley contributed well as the libero and finished the match with 13 digs.
Once again, the Frogs refused to quit in a match and came out of the locker rooms after the 40 percent break fired up. Whitfield, Harmon and junior Anna Vaughn made key offensive plays and stepped up their blocking to push the Horned Frogs to a 30-28 victory.
Vaughn finished the match with 10 kills.
San Diego State was able to regroup and take the fourth game to drop TCU to 12-9 overall and 2-5 in Mountain West Conference play.
The Frogs will step out of conference play next weekend as they head to Edinburg, Texas, to compete in the UT-Pan American tournament.
