BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 21 TCU logged its best round of the 54-hole Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Tuesday, but the team was unable to move up the standings on the final day. As a result, the Frogs' 13-over-par final score of 865 landed the squad 11th among the 12 teams competing at the Old Overton Golf Club (Par 71, 6,958 yards).
Georgia Tech, ranked second in the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll, won the tournament with a total of 828 (-24). Top-ranked Georgia finished six strokes back (834). TCU was one of nine top-25 teams competing in Birmingham, Ala.
TCU played even-par golf as a team on the final day, keyed by sophomore Franklin Corpening's 3-under round of 68. Each of the remaining four Horned Frogs shot 1-over scores of 72.
Senior Drew Laning paced the Frogs for the second consecutive tournament, as he finished tied for 27th. His three-round sum of 214 (+1) marked a career-best effort. Meanwhile, Corpening moved up 13 spots into a share of 32nd thanks to his first collegiate sub-70 score. He finished one shot behind Laning at 215 (+2).
True freshmen Jon McLean and Robby Ormand, who began the day sharing 41st place, remained in a tie following the third round. Despite registering tourney-best scores on Tuesday, the duo slipped a spot into a tie for 42nd position at 218 (+5). James Sacheck's 1-over round was also his best of the week and helped the sophomore move into a tie for 53rd among the 60 participants.
TCU is next in action at the Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tenn., Oct. 15-16. The Horned Frogs have won the event twice in the past five years and placed second last year. TCU's five participants will be Laning, Corpening, McLean, Sacheck and junior Drew Stoltz.
