With three players scoring double-digit kills, TCU swept Wyoming for its second conference win of the season at the University Rec Center Tuesday night. Sophomore LeMeita Smith tallied 15 kills while hitting .452 to lead all scorers in the match.
The Frogs are coming off a heartbreaking loss to New Mexico on Saturday, but the team quickly placed the memories of the game in the past and focused on the Cowgirls. Sophomore Lauren Scott gave the Frogs problems early as she was able to make quick kills in the middle, thanks to a speedy offense. Smith quickly asserted herself as an offensive threat, tallying three kills in the early going.
With a late 28-24 lead, the young Horned Frogs seemed to have the game wrapped up but the Cowgirls made a 4-0 to tie the game. After a timeout, the home team regrouped and answered with a quick unanswered two to take the game.
Game two featured thunderous kills by both teams as TCU's Hayley Harmon and Wyoming's Scott went shot for shot. The kills continued to keep the crowd of the University Rec Center entertained and sophomore Talaya Whitfield's impossible digs added more excitement.
TCU was able to use the excitement and momentum in its favor to head into the locker room up 2-0. After the break, senior Erin Estep made three kills to start off the third game and junior Agi Nemeth saw her first action of the night. In limited action, the Gyor, Hungary, player got in on a crucial block and scored one kill.
With contributions coming from all over the court, the Purple and White finished off the visiting team from Laramie (30-22) for their 12th win of the season.
Whitfield finished the match 22 digs, one shy of tying her own school record of 23 for a three-game match. The 22 digs moved her into fifth-place all-time for career digs, surpassing Jen Cucca.
Vaughn also made a move up the career charts, surpassing Ellen Rehme for sixth-place all-time on the career kills chart.
Now in the full swing of conference play, TCU will travel to UNLV and San Diego this weekend. The Friday tilt versus UNLV is slated for 8 p.m. (CDT) and the Sunday match versus San Diego State is scheduled to get under way at 3 p.m. (CDT).
