BATTLE FOR THE IRON SKILLET: The Iron Skillet and Metroplex braggin' rights are on the line when the TCU Horned Frogs (1-0) host the SMU Mustangs (0-1) in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, September 11. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. The Frogs got their 108th season of intercollegiate football underway on September 2 when they outlasted the Northwestern Wildcats by a 48-45 margin in two overtimes in front of an ESPN2 audience. SMU fell to TCU's next opponent, Texas Tech, by a 27-13 count last Saturday in Dallas.
A LITTLE HISTORY: The Frogs own an all-time record of 512-495-57. TCU has fielded a team every year since 1896, with the exception of the 1900 campaign. With a 38-12 record over the last four-plus seasons (2000-04), the Frogs have begun the 21st century in much better fashion than they began the 20th century, when they were 2-18-3 from 1900-1904. In fact, it took the Frogs 10 years (1896-1905) to record 11 victories - they logged 11 wins in 2003 alone!
TCU-SMU...THE SERIES: The TCU-SMU rivalry dates back to 1915 (a 43-0 TCU victory in Fort Worth). This is the 85th meeting between these two Metroplex private universities. TCU has matched its longest winning streak in the series by taking the last five contests to take the all-time series lead by a 39-38-7 count. In addition to winning five in a row, TCU has won six of the last seven and eight of the last 10 meetings between the two schools. TCU owns a 20-16-5 advantage in games played in Fort Worth.
MORE ON THE SERIES: The Frogs have defeated the Mustangs five straight years for the first time since 1949-1953. TCU has outscored the Ponies by a 158-36 margin over the last five meetings, including a 20-13 victory in Dallas to end the 2003 regular season. SMU has scored more than 21 points against TCU just once since 1986 (27 in 1996). See page 3 of the notes for more.
GUNN NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: TCU quarterback Tye Gunn was selected as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Northwestern. Gunn completed 20-of-38 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns, all career highs, in leading the Frogs to a 48-45 double overtime victory.
