Killeen, Pigg Miss Cut at U.S. Amateur

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - TCU golfers J.J. Killeen and Drew Pigg failed to qualify for the U.S. Amateur match play on Tuesday, as Killeen missed the projected 64-player cut by five strokes, while Pigg finished 11 shots off the pace. The 36 holes of stroke play at the 104th U.S. Amateur were held at Winged Foot Golf Club's West Course (7,266 yards, par 70) and East Course (6,760 yards, par 70) in Mamaroneck, N.Y. On Tuesday, Killeen, who last year reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur, recorded an eight-over-par 78 on the historic West Course to finish the event with a 36-hole sum of 155 (+15). The senior from Lubbock played the middle 18 holes of the tournament at three-over par, but was seven-over on the first nine and plus-five over the final nine holes. He had trouble finding the fairway off the tee, and thus had just one birdie over the two days. Killeen was a second-team All-Conference USA performer and helped TCU win its fourth straight league title and place 20th at the NCAA Championships last year. He was making his third appearance at the U.S. Amateur (2000, 2003, 2004). Pigg, a junior, bounced back from an 84 on Monday to card a 77 (+7) at the East Course on Tuesday for a two-round 161 (+21). Pigg's second 18 included two birdies, one more than he scored during his opening round. Par 4s proved to be tough on the Plano native during the tournament, as he was 15-over on those 24 holes. This marked the second straight U.S. Amateur appearance for Pigg. The junior took part in two tournaments for the Frogs last year and has competed in five events during his two-year TCU career. Over the years, Winged Foot has hosted four U.S. Opens (1929, '59, '74 and '84); two Women's U.S. Opens (1957 and '72); one PGA Championship (1997); the inaugural U.S. Senior Open (1984); one Walker Cup match (1948) and one U.S. Amateur (1940). The USGA accepted 7,356 entries for the 2004 U.S. Amateur. Sectional qualifying was conducted over 36 holes at 100 sites from July 21-Aug. 3 to finalize the 312-person field. The 64 remaining players will now compete in a match play elimination tournament, with the championship taking place on Sunday, Aug. 22. TCU, which finished the 2003-04 campaign ranked 10th in the nation according to Golfweek, will open its season on Sept. 11-12 at the Ridges Intercollegiate. -www.gofrogs.com-
