The TCU Horned Frogs put on full pads for Day 5 of their spring practice drills Tuesday afternoon. After going through the first portion of the session on the practice fields behind the Justin Center, the Frogs moved into Amon G. Carter Stadium for an 11-on-11 session.
"I thought we were more physical on defense today," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson following the practice. "But we need to tackle better on the second and third teams. Offensively, our number one group did not turn the ball over. The other positive thing from this was that we were able to play everybody."
For most of the 55-play session, the Horned Frog defense kept the offense in check. The defense logged four sacks and caused three turnovers, getting interceptions from Quincy Butler, Elvis Gallegos and Chase Ortiz.
Senior Kenny Boyd, moving back over to tailback after spending the 2003 season as a safety, showed some impressive moves on a pair of carries. In the first one, he started to his left, was stopped at the line of scrimmage, reversed his field where he appeared hemmed in for lost yardage, but reversed his field a second time and found daylight around the left end, rambling for 13 yards. The other carry resulted in a 20-yard burst up the middle.
Senior quarterback Brandon Hassell did not take part in the drills, but junior quarterback Tye Gunn ran with first unit.
"It felt good to get back out there and chase some of the rust off," said Gunn. "I can tell I haven't been out there for awhile, but it felt good to be back."
The Frogs will be back on the practice fields Wednesday and Thursday this week before enjoying an off week next week for spring break.
