Irving, Texas - Conference USA announced its 2004 All-Conference football teams today, as selected by the league's 11 head coaches and media members in each conference city. C-USA concluded its ninth regular season this past weekend, with five of the league's teams getting ready to participate in bowl games during December.
Regular season champion Louisville placed a league-high six players on the All-Conference first team, finishing with 10 total selections. Three members of the Cardinals top-ranked offense dot the first team, including QB Stefan LeFors, the nation's leader in pass efficiency (185.4), and WR J.R. Russell, the league's leader in receptions (67). Highlighting U of L's three defensive first team selections were LB Robert McCune, whose 105 tackles ranked fifth in C-USA and DE Marcus Jones, who is second in sacks with 8.5.
Memphis tied for the second-most selections on the first team with four and garnered nine overall picks. Running back DeAngelo Williams has re-wrote the Memphis rushing record book this season with 1,828 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground. He enters the GMAC Bowl needing 172 yards to become just the 11th player in NCAA history to run for 2,000 yards in one season. Helping pave the way for Williams is C Gene Frederic, an All-Conference selection for the second straight year.
UAB joined Memphis in producing four first team choices, placing eight total players on the squad. The Blazers most notable selection on offense is wide receiver Roddy White, who set a new Conference USA single-season record for receiving yards with 1,339 and scored 13 touchdowns this season. Defensively, C-USA sack leader Larry McSwain (13) was honored as a first team defensive lineman.
Cincinnati produced more overall All-Conference selections than any school, placing 11 players on the three-team squad. The Bearcats had three first-teamers, including defensive linemen Trent Cole and Andre Frazier. Cole ranks fourth in the nation in tackles for loss with 20 and has registered 7.5 sacks, while Frazier has 32 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three sacks.
Southern Miss had eight overall selections, including three first-teamers. John Eubanks became the first player since UAB's Rodregis Brooks in 1999 to earn first team accolades at two different positions, garnering honors as a defensive back and a kick returner. Golden Eagle linebacker Michael Boley, a four-time Player of the Week selection who has 117 tackles and 6.5 sacks, earned first team recognition for the second straight season.
TCU had a total of nine all-league picks, while Tulane produced six. The Horned Frogs had three first team selections, including offensive lineman Anthony Alabi, who earned first team honors for the second year in a row, and S Marvin Godbolt, a third team choice in 2003. Green Wave WR Roydell Williams, who now owns the C-USA all-time record for touchdown catches (35), is listed among the first team performers, along with Tulane P Chris Beckman, whose 42.7-yard average led the league.
Houston had a total of five all-league picks, while Army, East Carolina and USF had four. The Cougars had two second team selections, WR Vincent Marshall (1,0404 yards receiving) and DL Joe Clay, while Army RB Carlton Jones, who finished the year with 1,269 rushing yards, the second-highest total in Academy history, highlighted the Black Knights three second team choices. East Carolina produced the only freshman to earn first team accolades in punt returner Travis Williams (league-leading 17.7 avg.), while USF placed RB Andre Hall (1,357 yards) on the first team.
Conference USA will announce its Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Players of the Year, as well as the Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year on Wednesday, December 8.
