Charles McMillian has been named the cornerbacks coach on the TCU football staff, head coach Gary Patterson announced today.
"I've known Chuck for a long time," said Patterson. "He played for me at Utah State and coached with me at the Naval Academy. He has played in our system and understands our system. He has been successful as a coach, with a handful of his former players currently playing in the NFL. He also has strong Texas ties, as he grew up in Bryan, and is a great recruiter," added Patterson.
McMillian, 32, has spent the past two seasons as the cornerbacks coach at Indiana University. In 2002, the Hoosiers ranked 33rd in the country in pass defense. Prior to his arrival in Bloomington, McMillian spent one season at the University of Cincinnati, helping the Bearcats to a 7-5 record and a trip to the Motor City Bowl.
Before McMillian's tenure at Cincinnati, he spent time at Utah State, Boise State and Navy.
He began his coaching career as a student assistant at Utah State for spring practice in 1995 while finishing his undergraduate degree.
McMillian left Utah State in 1995 for the first of two coaching tenures at the United States Naval Academy. He spent three years (1995-97) as a military assistant coach, serving as secondary coach for the junior varsity team while assisting during varsity defense and special teams practices.
McMillian left Navy to become the secondary coach at Boise State in 1998, a position he held for two years. Featuring a secondary that ranked 21st in the nation in pass efficiency defense, the Broncos posted a 10-3 record in 1999, including a victory over Louisville in the Humanitarian Bowl.
He returned to Navy as a secondary coach in 2000, helping safety Chris Lepore earn All-America honors.
During his playing days, McMillian served as the captain of the Utah State squad for two years (1993-94) and played on the team that won the Big West title and appeared in the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl.
Prior to Utah State, he was a first team all-conference selection and the 1992 league Defensive Player of the Year at San Jose City College.
The Bryan, Texas native is a 1995 graduate of Utah State with a degree in science and liberal arts. Born December 28, 1971, he has one daughter, Cherrelle.
