TCU Golfers in Second Place After Day One

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - TCU, rated 12th by Golfweek and 14th in the Precept Coaches preseason poll, sits in second place among 18 teams following the first day of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges. The Horned Frogs, who finished the first 18 holes in 10th place, moved up the leaderboard in the second round, which was suspended due to darkness at 8:00 p.m. TCU is currently six strokes behind first-place Florida, the third-ranked team in the nation.
Junior David Schultz, who shared medalist honors at the Ridges last year, owns a share of sixth place after day one. He fired a two-under-par 70 on the first 18 holes, then closed with an even-par 72 in round two. Schultz, an honorable mention All-American last year, had seven birdies to help him to a two-round total of 142. Last year, Schultz tied for medalist honors at the tournament.
At one-under-par, senior Adam Meyer is currently tied for 10th place at the event. Meyer posted a 71 in the first round, and is even through the second 15 holes. Meyer, an honorable mention All-American in 2002, was touted as a preseason third-team All-American this year, according to Golfweek.
Drew Stoltz, a redshirt freshman making his Horned Frog debut, is also tied for 10th place at one-under. He posted a 71 (-1) in the morning and is sitting at even par in the second round with three holes remaining. However, Stoltz's scores do not count toward the team total since he entered the event competing as an individual.
Sophomore Colby Beckstrom, the 2003 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, stands on the 18th green with a four-under par score in his second round. He notched a 78 in the first round, and currently is tied for 22nd place with a one-over score. Meanwhile, sophomore Drew Pigg bounced back from an 80 in the opening round to post an even-par 72 in the afternoon.
Junior J.J. Killeen, who advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur last month, is currently tied for 27th place with a two-over score. He carded a 76 (+4) in round two, and now is two-under through 15 holes in his second round.
Of the top 30 teams in the 2003-04 Golfweek preseason poll, 15 will be playing at the 18-team tournament this weekend. In addition to No. 12 TCU, the field includes: No. 1 Clemson, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Georgia, No. 10 Georgia Tech, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 16 Southern California, No. 19 Wake Forest, No. 21 Auburn, No. 22 East Tennessee State, No. 23 South Carolina, No. 25 Tennessee, No. 26 Oklahoma, No. 27 Tulsa, No. 29 Illinois, Alabama, Kansas and Virginia Tech.
"I'm really pleased with the way we played today," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "There are so many strong teams here, and to be in the position we are in is really an accomplishment."
TCU, which took third place at last year's Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, claimed the tournament title in 2000 and 2001. Frog golfers, Steve Shuert in 2001 and Schultz in 2002, have won individual titles in the last two events at the Ridges.
