The 2003 football season officially got underway this morning for the TCU Horned Frogs as they took to the practice fields for the first time. The newcomers were on the field first, as they went through about an hour-long practice, followed by the returning veterans, who went through a two hour session. Temperatures climbed to near the century mark before the Frogs left the field early in the afternoon.
"We went longer than usual on the first day of practice," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson of the veterans' session. "This was more of a middle-of-the-season practice. I think we got a little tired by the end. By day three, this will be good for us. We are trying to gain ground mentally and really pushing the teaching part right now," he added.
"It was hot," said senior linebacker Josh Goolsby. "But we pushed through it. It definitely is hotter this year than it has been in the past."
"It was hot," agreed senior tailback Ricky Madison. "But that's cool. Everyone felt good. Normally we only start with around 18 periods (90 minutes), so this was a little longer. There's nothing else to do right now, so we may as well be out here."
Coach Patterson and his staff welcomed 27 newcomers during the early workout. Those putting on the Horned Frogs' helmet and shorts for the first time included: freshmen recruits James Battle, Tommy Blake, Brian Bonner, Marcus Brock, Quinton Cunigan, Ervin Dickerson, Marcus Draper, Trey Englert, David Hawthorne, Chad Huffman, William Jackson, Matty Lindner, Jamison Newby, Will Oliver, Chase Ortiz, David Roach and Wade Sisk; junior college transfer Larry Bradford and Logo Tevaseu; transfer Andrew Ward; and walk-ons Cad Davis (S, Midland Christian), Ryan Hessing (FB, Fort Worth Arlington Heights), Adam High (OL, Amarillo High), Adam Lowery (OL, Brandon, Miss. High), Preston Prine (S, Dallas Lake Highlands), Jack Proctor (TE, Forth Worth Paschal) and Anthony Savino (OL, Costa Mesa, Calif. Lutheran).
The entire squad will practice together on Friday morning beginning at 8 a.m.
